ISEP Course 8: Simulation Beyond the Mannequins - May 2024

Welcome to ISEP Course 8: Simulation Beyond the Mannequins. In this course, you will learn about emerging technologies and effective integration of virtual learning experiences, including serious gaming. You will continue to work with your peers to enhance both your Simulation-Based Education Proposal and Program Proposal. Get ready to give and receive constructive feedback to help each other grow. You will be using the peer review activities in all of the courses.

You will leave Course 8 with both an augmented Simulation Based Education Proposal and Program Proposal ready to focus on Simulation Operations in Course 9. You will also update your Participant Journal with new insights, questions, and goals.

Course 8 Discussion: Game Mechanics
Make 1 discussion post to continue.
Make 1 discussion post to continue. Hopefully, this discussion will be a fun way to work together to understand how synonymously game mechanics match traditional simulation design. Consider this brief scenario description, think about possible teachable moments/learning objectives. S.D. is a 50-year-old male who has just had an abdominal surgery. He is NPO and has an IV of D5RL running at 100 cc/hr. You enter the room and notice the IV has stopped running. The PT has poor skin turgor and is hypotensive. The PT tells you the IV is hurting him. For your initial post: State a learning goal and what you need to see to verify that your participants have mastered it. Pose a clinical problem or situation that might arise. State a possible decision your participants might need to make. List a few decision options: Present 1: outcome/consequence cascading from each option these can be administrative, interpersonal, clinical. Etc. Read your peers' posts and pick two that might interface with your ideas. Think of them as actions from two other members of a clinical design team. Respond by offering how these new variables would affect your presented goals and outcomes. Again, just have fun. It might be easy to see how this kind of brainstorming by facilitators and managers could evolve into an engaging and impactful learning experience. Another benefit of these kinds of dill-downs is that these interactions will help you to be better shoppers when investigating possible virtual simulation products.

Course 8: Virtual Simulation Assignment
Graded as Complete/Incomplete | Due Date: 10/31/2024 at 7:59 PM (EDT)
Graded as Complete/Incomplete | Due Date: 10/31/2024 at 7:59 PM (EDT) To complete each course, you are required to provide a reflective journal entry. Each entry should contain a minimum of 500 words. The document submitted should be a cumulative document with headings and dates of the course journals you are submitting. Reflection should consider this process: • Description (keep this fairly short) • Interpretation or analysis (this should be the main body of your work) • Outcome or application (ensure you draw clear application to your future practice). There are journal prompts for most course journals. These are intended to focus you on the materials that were covered in that module. Please note that some journals will have a Part I and a Part II because of the varied materials that are presented in that course. By the end of the ISEP program, your reflective journal will demonstrate your individual learning and progress as a simulation educator/practitioner.
